Baek-Ki KIM, South Korea

Born in 1966, lives and works in Berlin

Beakki Kim majored in ceramics at Hongik University in Seoul, Korea. However, since the beginning of 1990 he has performed more than 800 times in South Korea, China, Japan, Australia, London, Berlin, Estonia, Finland, and many other countries.

In 2000 he established KoPAS (Korea Performance Art Sprit) founding a progressive art group with artists from various fields like dance, media, art, music, theater permitting an experimental cross-disciplinary genre and facilitating an expansion intto the field of performance art. Beakki Kim was art Director at KEAF (Korea Exprimental Art Festival 2002-2012) which saw artists from more than 15 countries participating . He was also art director at SIPF (Seoul International performance Festival 2007-2010), and UPAF (Ulsan performance Art Festival 2008-2009). Between 2001 to 2009 he organised 60 [House Art parties ] in Korea, and as art director was responsible for both the development and spreading of performance art to wider audiences. In addition, he is the author of nine performance art-related books and has made two DVDs. He has been working in Berlin since 2013.

His performances draw on objects, colours, music and images of the oriental philosophy “ jeong.jung.dong” (Stillness, Centre, Movement) . “Jeong.jung.dong” teaches static tranquility amid a moving world. A Tranquil state that accepts change as endemic to the natural world. The idea of this 'stillness in motion' is to keep the mind centered throughout motion, to keep the mind in the gap between thoughts, not to agitate the mind with thinking but to remain in the perpetual Now, a pure present that dispels our instinctive fear of dynamic world changes.

Through the world of jeong.jung.dong (Stillness, Centre, Movement) Beakki Kim has been a struggling artist walking the tightrope between ideals and reality. Often autobiographical, often inside the story of pain.
